Imaging with SmartDeploy vs. Symantec Ghost

If there is one product we are compared to the most, it’s Symantec Ghost. While Ghost has been around for decades and is the go-to imaging software, users tell us that SmartDeploy is comparatively faster, easier to use, and offers a consistent imaging and deployment process for any version of Windows.

If there is one product we are compared to the most, it’s Symantec Ghost. While Ghost has been around for decades and is the go-to imaging software, users tell us that SmartDeploy is comparatively faster, easier to use, and offers a consistent imaging and deployment process for any version of Windows.

Approach to imaging
Traditionally, Symantec Ghost is a hardware-dependent imaging solution. Users accomplish imaging and deployment tasks by cloning physical hardware. But this method really only works for deploying images to identical hardware models. SmartDeploy, in comparison, enables users to deploy a single image to any hardware device. SmartDeploy separates the software information in the image from the hardware information with pre-built Platform Packs allowing users to achieve single image management.

Driver Management
SmartDeploy provides individual Platform Packs that contain all the drivers for each device in your organization. At deployment time, SmartDeploy only injects the drivers needed for that specific device. With Ghost, users either build a separate image for each device or utilize an add-on, DeployAnywhere. Add-ons like DeployAnywhere or other third party driver tools use Plug and Play to determine the right drivers for the device, which can cause blue screens and other problems.

Evolution of Windows
With each new version of Windows, imaging and deployment procedures have changed. Windows 7 and Windows 8 brought about changes in the ability to capture multiple partitions, disk formatting options, Sysprep syntax and more. These new changes have caused Symantec Ghost customers to struggle with configuring the program to work correctly. SmartDeploy is built to handle each version of Windows exactly the same way, improving IT efficiency by maximizing their time and streamlining deployment projects.

SmartDeploy takes a modern imaging approach saving companies around the world significant time and IT resources. Read more about how SmartDeploy compares to Symantec Ghost or join a SmartDeploy live demonstration to learn more.
