When prospective customers are evaluating SmartDeploy Enterprise, they often ask how the software is licensed and supported. So, I thought I’d take a minute and give a general overview.

SmartDeploy licensing for devices
SmartDeploy is deployment or imaging software for Windows and Windows applications. Like many imaging products, SmartDeploy is licensed on a per-machine basis. What does that mean? Well, it means a license is required for each device that is deployed or imaged with SmartDeploy. Pretty straightforward. Even better, a machine can be reimaged as many times as you like. When you buy SmartDeploy, the pricing structure is tiered so the more licenses you purchase, the lower the cost per license becomes.

Along with your initial SmartDeploy purchase, you will also need to purchase at least one year of support which is available in Basic, Essential, or Premium levels. Licenses are a one-time purchase (perpetual) whereas support is sold in one-year increments (term). A valid support agreement grants customers access to product updates, the device driver library (Platform Packs), technical support, and more.

SmartDeploy licensing for administrators
Once you have purchased SmartDeploy your technicians have unlimited access to SmartDeploy administrative tools. The SmartDeploy administrative tools are used to create deployment packages which consist of images, device driver packages, answer files, and boot/deployment media. A license is not required for each workstation you install the SmartDeploy administrative tools on, so you and your team can create and modify as many deployment packages as you want. This means you can have as many custom images and deployment packages as you like. Just make sure that you have a license for each device you reimage.

Purchasing additional licenses
Additional SmartDeploy licenses can be purchased at any time and the pricing tier will be determined by the total number of licenses owned by your company which means you won’t be penalized for adding a smaller quantity of licenses after your initial large-quantity purchase. Additional licenses should be purchased prior to deploying the devices but if for some reason you deploy prior to acquiring the additional licenses then you have 15 business days to purchase additional licenses to maintain legal compliance according to the SmartDeploy EULA.
