End of Support: Win7, WS2008 R2

As we all know, support for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 ended on January 14, 2020, more than a decade after the initial releases. Microsoft recommends that all organizations move to a modern operating system, such as Windows 10, to avoid exposure to security vulnerabilities, avoid poor performance issues, and organizational productivity.

We analyzed our data and the good news is that many SmartDeploy customers have already made the move away from Windows 7. In fact, less than 2% of overall SmartDeploy deployments in the last 6 months were performed for these OS versions. Based on these data points, we will begin our end of support timeline.

As of September 10, 2020:

  • Support for deploying Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 will end.
  • Support for the creation or update of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Platform Packs will also end.

As of December 31, 2020:

  • Console host support for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 will end.
  • Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Platform Packs will no longer be available for download in the library.

If your organization will be significantly impacted by the end of life support, please contact your Account Manager to discuss your options. We understand there are some specialty roles that some legacy devices may play for your organization and would like to ensure, to the degree that we are able, you are not impacted by Windows 7 support ending.
