It’s time for businesses to plan long-term remote IT strategies. In the past 6 months, 80 percent of IT professionals supported at least one quarter of their workforce remotely (Say Goodbye to Traditional PC Lifecycle Management).
The old way of managing endpoints worked for decades, but it no longer suffices in the remote workplace. Businesses trade employee productivity to remain on legacy management platforms they understand. In contrast, modern solutions are user-centric and prioritize end users through their entire journey – from onboarding to exiting the company.
This progressive IT approach provides businesses a strategic advantage with key benefits including workplace flexibility, increased productivity, security improvements, and reduced spending throughout all scenarios of the employee journey.
SAY HELLO (VIRTUALLY) TO AMBER
Title: Outside Sales Representative
Worker Status: 100% Remote
Location: Phoenix, AZ
Industry: Business Management Software
Worker Status: 25% Remote, 75% Onsite
Size: 300+ Employees
Location: Atlanta, GA
HIRE & ONBOARD
As a sales representative, Amber will mostly work remotely – from home, on the road, and in airports and hotels.
Hardware: Dell Latitude 7490 laptop and peripherals
Software: Windows 10 20H2, on-premises CRM system, Microsoft Teams for collaboration, and Microsoft Office 365 for productivity. Access to Microsoft OneDrive storage where sales flyers, documents, and presentations are stored
Hardware independence with deployment from the cloud
The IT department orders Amber’s Dell Latitude and peripherals to dropship to Amber’s home. Once received, IT deploys a Windows golden image (includes Windows 10 20H2, CRM, and Office 365) from the company’s OneDrive storage by using SmartDeploy’s cloud deployment service.
SmartDeploy provides the Dell Latitude 7490, Windows 10 device drivers to simplify the deployment process.
Two years later, Amber is on a business trip visiting an out-of-state client. As she prepares for the meeting from a hotel lobby, she logs in to CRM to obtain notes for her presentation. Unfortunately, the application crashes and won’t start.
Application revocation and redeployment
Following protocol, IT troubleshoots the issue for 30 minutes. When they’re unable to solve it, they delete the application remotely by using a custom script from the SmartDeploy Console. Then, they securely reinstall the application from the company’s OneDrive storage by using the SmartDeploy application deployment solution.
Amber gets promoted to a new position with the company as a Human Resources (HR) manager. She still works remotely from home but also goes to headquarters once per quarter. A new PC configuration is required, with new policies and new applications.
Remotely reimage and migrate user data
Amber’s PC is already connected to VPN, so IT reimages it with the HR image over the company’s network rather than from the cloud. Next, they rename the computer when the SmartDeploy wizard prompts. Then, they deploy a custom script from the SmartDeploy Console to add the necessary printers at headquarters.
Amber has a large project due on Monday morning, so she takes her laptop to a coffee shop over the weekend to finalize a presentation. While leaving the coffee shop, she drops her laptop, and it will no longer turn on.
Hardware independent deployments to any PC
Amber purchases the only business-class computer left at a local electronics store, an HP Envy x360. By using SmartDeploy, IT is able to deploy the SmartDeploy’s Platform Pack library provides up-to-date device driver packs for more than 1,500 models, allowing IT to deploy one image to any business-class model.
UPDATES & PATCHES
There’s been a major version update to the company’s HR software that Amber frequently uses to obtain data for recruitment insight. Without the update, she’s unable to access her usual reports. She needs the updated HR application.
Remotely update an application
Rather than reimage Amber’s entire laptop, IT uninstalls the HR software and then deploys the updated application from the company’s OneDrive storage by using SmartDeploy application deployment and cloud deployment services.
After seven years, Amber resigns during a video chat with her manager. She shares that she’ll be working for a competitor. IT needs to disable her access to any company data immediately.
Secure remote wipe
To immediately disable Amber’s credentials, IT wipes the laptop clean remotely by connecting to the SmartDeploy Console from the cloud. They download the “Script – RemoteWipe” pack from the Application Pack library. Once it is downloaded, they deploy this script from the cloud to complete the remote wipe.
Hybrid environments are inevitable for most businesses. As we saw with the COVID-19 pandemic, the workforce can change overnight, and it’s crucial to be prepared for every scenario. With SmartDeploy, IT has the flexibility to manage end users securely wherever they are—on-site, remote, or a hybrid of the two. Whether provisioning a computer from the cloud or PXE to USB, it’s the same process with SmartDeploy’s wizard-driven interface.
“In 5 minutes, you can learn the tool, and in 10 minutes you can master it,” explains System Administrator Alex Vartanian. “You get 90-95 percent of the functionality of Microsoft SCCM without having any demands on infrastructure or a steep learning curve,” he adds.
SmartDeploy is a robust tool that’s easy to learn for any IT skillset, allowing managing remote users to be very similar to managing on-site users. With flexible endpoint management options, SmartDeploy reduces user downtime, saves IT resources, and keeps the network secure—wherever users are.
